Kwajalein Atoll is located in the Republic of the Marshall Islands in the West Central Pacific Ocean. Kwajalein Atoll is 2,100 nautical miles southwest of Honolulu, Hawaii, and 2,300 nautical miles from New Zealand. The island chain is approximately 74 square miles. Kwajalein Atoll is the largest lagoon in the world - 1/2 mile wide and 2 1/2 miles long.

History

Currently, the atoll is under lease by the United States Army through the Compact of Free Association. Kwajalein Atoll played a key role in the Pacific battles of World War II. The indigenous population is approximately 13,500 people, most of which live on Ebeye Island.

Activities

There are many recreational activities, SCUBA diving, deep sea fishing, and just about anything water related. Unless you are employed with one of the many contractors, getting to, and enjoying all the activities, will require sponsorship by one of the island residents. (Kwaj Phonebook, 2007)
